This Shouldn't
Have Happened
Opening up her phone, Whitney knew within a minute where Dillon was. Or, at least, she knew where Dillon’s phone was. And, knowing Dillon as she did, she knew that if Dillon wasn’t with her phone it meant something huge had happened.
According to her phone, Dillon was inside of Bellevue East High School.
Whitney cringed. She remembered going to Dillon’s brother’s football games at Bellevue East last season. It had never been her idea of a nice Friday night.
Even worse was the possibility that this meant Dillon was with their parents. Dillon’s parents were terrifying.
Neither parent was interested in showing love or tolerance for Dillon’s queer adult lifestyle. When they’d been together, Dillon’s mother made a regular point of telling them that she was praying for Dillon to snap out of the “Devil’s trap” they were supposedly caught in.
While Dillon’s parents showed Dillon a constant condescending sympathy, they treated Whitney as an agent of the devil who had ensorcelled their beloved child. Whitney shuttered to imagine what they would do if they saw her now.
