This Shouldn't
Have Happened
After taking a moment for a few deep breaths and half a glass of water, Whitney called her best friend Maria. In addition to her loyalty, she was also one of the most connected people Whitney had ever met. She was one of those people who always had plans before and after every event you ever saw them at.
“Hi Whitney, is this about your truck?”
Whitney couldn’t remember whether she had put Maria on the threatening email thread. She cringed at the fear that somehow half of all Nebraska already knew before remembering that she had told Maria about it the day before.
“Yeah. Do you know Dillon’s new address?”
Luckily for Whitney, Maria was good friends with one of Dillon’s new roommates and had been at the apartment two days ago. She texted Whitney the address and told her to call if she needed anything else. Maria warned that she was about to leave for a dinner, a poetry reading, and then a drinks thing, but promised she could step outside for a call if it was urgent.
Whitney grabbed the truck’s spare key and rushed out the door. Biking to Dillon’s new block, she was crushed to find that her truck was not there. She biked up and down the block a couple times just to make sure she wasn’t missing it amongst the rest of the street parking, but it wasn’t there.
