“Yes,” Whitney responded. “I’m here for the football game.”
Vice Principal Denton pointed at the entrance only a short walk away. “Wonderful,” he started in a tone that didn’t sound very wonderful, “you can come in right over there.”
Whitney felt like she needed to come up with some reason she hadn’t gone in the entrance. Maybe it was social pressure, maybe it was strategy, but she stuttered, “Is there a separate entrance for visiting fans? I don’t want to end up on the wrong side of the field.”
The lie worked. VPD relaxed. He explained that there was only one entrance and they parted on pleasant terms. She saw him watching her walk, so she walked as normally as she could.
